Husband, in-laws booked for harassing NRI woman for dowry

ABOHAR: Abohar police have booked the husband and mother-in-law and father-in-law of an NRI woman from Canada for allegedly harassing her for dowry. In her complaint to police, Hunardeep Kaur Sidhu alleged that her husband married her to help his parents immigrate to Canada and after they got their papers, they began to harass her on one pretext or the other.

After going through the complaint, police have booked Hunardeep's husband Harmandeep Singh Grewal, his mother Ranjit Kaur and father Hardip Singh Grewal for allegedly harassing and assaulting her. The complainant stated to police that she was married to Ludhiana resident Harmandeep Grewal in November 2008. She mentioned in her complaint that Harmandeep was living in Canada at the time of their marriage but had not acquired Canadian citizenship.

She alleged that by the virtue of her marriage, Harmandeep's parents moved to Canada and later began to harass her for bringing less dowry, and her husband also supported them. She left her husband's home after being troubled by him and his family and began to live with her parents. Hunardeep said she filed the complaint after their marital discord couldn't be settled amicably.

Even Muslim women don’t like husband with more wives: Court

MUMBAI: A family court, while deciding a divorce petition last week, yobserved, "In today's age, and in a city like Mumbai, even a Muslim woman does not like her husband to have more wives, though the Personal Law permits it."

The observation was made in context to a claim that relations between the couple deteriorated after the man remarried his first wife.

The court granted the divorce petition filed by the woman on grounds of cruelty. The husband was, in fact, convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment for attacking the petitioner and their two daughters with a scythe in 2010.

The court observed that this was the best evidence of the man's cruelty.

The couple married in 1990 after the woman's first husband died of a heart attack, leaving behind a daughter. In the petition filed in 2009, the woman said that the man was a software engineer but quit his job to stay idle at home. yShe alleged that he demanded money from her father, and began to beat and abuse her. The woman said that he drove her out of the house, forcing her to move to rented premises with her daughters in August 2002.

The woman also prayed for the house purchased by her father in Juhu.

The man denied the charges and said the house was purchased along with her father. He claimed that he had married the petitioner in a hurry, after objections to him accompanying her for her exams to Hyderabad in 1990. The man said she made him quit his job, as she wanted a rich husband, and her non-cooperation in his business led him to incur heavy losses. He blamed the woman's daughter from her first marriage for driving a wedge in the family.

The court found that he had inflicted physical, mental, economic and soycial cruelty on the woman. The court directed him to pay Rs40,000 towards litigation expenses and ordered him not to interfere in her possession of the house.

'Spurt in extramarital relations in Kerala'

KANNUR: Advocating the need for making premarital counselling mandatory, state social welfare board chairperson Kamarunnissa Anwar said the advent of social media and widespread use of cell phones have spurred discord within families.

Consumption of alcohol, too, contributed to marital discord, she said, adding that mandatory premarital counselling could tackle the issue.

As many as 3,406 domestic violence cases were registered in 2013-14 alone. Of this, 672 pertained to sexual atrocities, she said.

"Of the total cases reported to the board, 16% of cases were of illicit relationship in which social media and cell phones played villains, while 61% cases were related to alcohol-spurred violence," she said on the side lines of a workshop on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 here. The social welfare board would intensify its campaign to make people aware of the Act, she said.

She said extramarital relations were rising at an alarming rate. Even recently married youngsters were entertaining such relations, underscoring the importance of premarital counselling.

Anwar said there should be a gender-sensitive approach to handle the issue. The misuse of social media among women was also on the rise, she pointed out.

"But the authorities are yet to take serious steps to make counselling mandatory, though it could save many lives from falling into extramarital affairs and divorce," Anwar said.

The highest number of cases-845-under the Act was registered in Thiruvananthapuram. In Ernakulam 387 cases were reported, while Kozhikode had 377. Kannur came fourth with 253 cases. In Thiruvananthaluram the maximum numbers of cases were reported because of the people there were more aware of the Act.

"It is quite possible that domestic violence and issues of marital discord could be even higher in other districts but it is not being reported due to the lack of awareness," she opined.

Anwar also questioned the rationale of letting Govindachami, who was awarded capital punishment in Soumya murder case, to 'enjoy his holidays' in the jail.

Despite Madras HC order, RSS rallies stopped, activists arrested

CHENNAI: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists were arrested in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday as they attempted to take out route marches in their khakhi-white uniforms to mark the RSS foundation day and kick start celebrations to commemorate the 1000th coronation year of 11th century Tamil King Rajendra Chola.

Despite the explicit orders of the Madras high court permitting the route marches, police prevented them. Thousands of marchers including BJP national executive member L Ganesan in Madurai and BJP national secretary H Raja in Dindigul courted arrest condemning the police for acting in contempt of court orders.

"We will definitely move the high court on Monday against police for contempt of court," Ganesan told TOI. "It is nonsensical to ban marches by a nationalist organization like the RSS," he averred.

RSS state joint secretary S Ramamurthy expressed dismay that despite the nod given by the DGP Ashok Kumar to the RSS on Saturday that the route marches were okay provided no music bands were in attendance, on Sunday morning the police had changed their decision. "It is my personal impression that police seemed to be helpless on account of political pressure," he said.

The Madras high court had on Friday green-flagged the RSS processions at seven locations in Tamil Nadu, saying they could not be stalled by police citing archaic colonial-era legislation and "intelligence inputs" which were too general. Police authorities who denied permission for the rallies had also invoked a wrong provision of law, the court said.
